20TH CENTURY SEPHARDIC SONGS
Works by Donostia; Halffter; Ohana; Nin-Culmell; Rodrigo; Mudarra; Castelnuovo; Elias; Milhaud; Ravel etc.
Elena Gragera - mezzo-soprano, Anton Cardo - piano
Sephardic music based on the Jewish-Spanish Romancero (collections of Spanish romances) is the basis behind this recording, although the concert piano accompaniment provides these folk songs with a more elaborate dimension. Three literary genres can be distinguished in the Sephardic poetry set to song: romance, lyrical song (or romansa) and the copla (a kind of ballad).
In their forms and contents, the songs on this CD also show clear influences from North Africa, Turkey and Western Europe - because of the wide distribution of the Sephardic people.
