Elizabeth I, ‘the fairest queen of England’, who reigned from 1558 to 1603, had a passion for music, dance and drama. She kept talented lutenists in her privy chamber, eagerly attended masque performances and participated in dancing. There is no doubt that she herself enjoyed singing and playing on instruments, although a contemporary report tells us that in her music making she was ‘not ignorant nor excellent’.
