The French virtuoso trumpeter Maurice André was born in 1933 in Alès, a mining community in Provence. He took up the trumpet at the age of 12, though his livelihood came initially from working in the mines. However, his musical abilities earned him a place at the Paris Conservatoire and later a career as an orchestral player. The turning point in his fortunes as an international soloist came in 1963, when he won the Munich International Competition. Subsequently he set out to establish his instrument, especially the relatively new piccolo trumpet, as a serious solo voice.
