“Throughout his long and illustrious career, Yehudi Menuhin was rarely blessed with an accompanist as sensitive and sympatico as his sister, Hephzibah, who really deserves equal billing in this latest issue in Naxos Historical’s valuable series of momentous reissues. … An outstanding example of two superb individuals playing, magically, as one.” The Observer on Vol. 1 (8110771).
The German Romantic repertoire suited both Yehudi and Hephzibah very well: Yehudi’s plangent violin tone and innate sense of lyricism is given full rein throughout, while the demanding piano parts suit Hephzibah’s strong technique and innate musicality. The siblings brought an intrinsic mutual understanding to their music making, and it was this rapport which made their recordings together so outstanding and memorable.
These brand new transfers are by Ward Marston: “His transfer captures the ripeness and ‘edge’ of the young Menuhin’s tone to perfection.” Gramophone on Schumann / Dvořák Violin Concertos (8110966).
