Charles Valentin ALKAN (1813-1888)
Chamber Music:
Grand Duo Concertant Op.21, Sonate de concert Op.47, Trio Op.30
Trio Alkan
• Previously issued on Marco Polo (8.223383), this disc now brings to a wider audience some of Alkan’s less familiar chamber works.
• Alkan’s music is rooted in the classical tradition, but these highly original works are bold in their tonal language and thus bring to mind the harmonies of Berlioz and Faure. The Sonate de concert was described by Ronald Smith as “the missing link between the cello sonatas of Beethoven and Brahms”.
• “The performances, by members of the aptly named Trio Alkan, are quite superb, and a more high-profile trio of players would be hard pressed to better these accounts… Recommended” Gramophone review of the Marco Polo release
