Capilla Penaflorida, Ministriles de Marsias, Josep Cabre
Anchieta (also known as Antxieta) was one of the leading Spanish composers of sacred music of his time, serving as maestro di capilla at the Spanish Royal Court. Of his compositions some thirty works survive, among them his Missa Sine Nomine. This is presented on this recording interspersed with works by his contemporaries, including Francisco de Penalosa, a member of the papal chapel, who was held in even higher esteem than Anchieta, and other liturgical pieces, in order to evoke the sound of a Spanish liturgical ceremony of the early 16th century.
The programme is performed by the Capilla Penaflorida. Formed in 1985, the group hails from the Basque region of Spain and has made the early music of Spain its specialism.
