Havergal Brian (1876-1972)
Symphony No. 1 ‘Gothic’
With combined forces of around 1000 musicians, Brian’s ‘Gothic’ Symphony is possibly the largest-scale symphony ever written. Inspired by the art and architecture of the Gothic period, it assembles a vast number of musical influences, from medieval plainsong to early 20th century techniques, to create an immense kaleidoscope of musical colours.
“With choral singing as splendidly prepared as that of the seven choirs assembled here, the remarkable precision of Brian's ear is unarguably demonstrated. It may be hideously difficult to sing … but once you've managed it the almost Messiaen-like luminescence that Brian intended is obvious and breathtaking. … A towering achievement.” Gramophone on the original Marco Polo issue.
