WILLIAM ALWYN (1905–1985)
Symphony No. 1
Symphony No. 3
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra/ David Lloyd-Jones
Following the superb account of Alwyn’s Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5, and Peter Donohoe’s performance of Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2, the Alwyn centenary celebration continues with this outstanding performance of his Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3, brought to us by the Naxos doyen of British repertoire David Lloyd-Jones.
Alwyn was an unashamed Romantic who preferred his music to appeal to the heart rather than to the head. Perhaps the most accessible of the cycle, Symphony No. 1 is traditional in its form and stirring and extrovert in character. In contrast Symphony No. 3 is more challenging for the listener. The slow middle movement has a haunting, nocturnal atmosphere, while the outer movements are stormy and passionate, the finale having some of the fierce warlike character of Mars from Holst’s The Planets.
David Lloyd-Jones once again takes the spotlight this year after his work with Alwyn’s Symphonies 2 and 5 (8557647): “Among the many recordings marking Alwyn’s centenary these dynamic and tender performances stand out, making the best possible case for these neglected works.” (Jeremy Nicholas, Classic FM Magazine) This second CD of symphonies promises to be just as spectacular.
