An Introduction to MASSENET Werther
Written by Thomson Smillie, Narrated by David Timson.
OPERA EXPLAINED
An entertaining but informative series introducing the major operas of the repertoire, with historical background, an explanation of the plot and a presentation of the main arias and themes. Opera Explained is a unique idea. Nothing of its kind exists. An ideal introduction to individual operas either to prepare fo the full Naxos recordings, or a visit to the opera house.
WERTHER
Massenet’s werther combines a deeply tender story with music of beauty and eloquence. One act alone contains two of the greatest arias in the repertoire: the mezzo-soprano aria ‘Va! Laisse couler mes larmes’ and the tenor’s ‘Pouroui me reveiller’. In the sentimental power and melodic richness these arias encapsulate the qualities that account for the universal popularity of this great work.
