The young German trio [em] is not one to rest on its laurels. The first two albums were widely lauded, and the trio rocked at the Jazzwise 10th anniversary celebrations and at subsequent UK gigs last year, but rather than sticking to a safe formula the third album is a sonic departure, a subtly-nuanced exercise in jazz reductionism. The pace slows, the ambience mellows, only the dissonance remains. Yet the result is as engrossing as ever. It is hard to sound like no other piano trio, but [em] is a unique entity.
