This recording showcases two great Bach singers, contralto Janet Baker and the Dutch soprano Elly Ameling, in arias from Bach's St Matthew Passion.
Both Janet Baker and Elly Ameling have recorded the Bach Cantatas and the Christmas Oratorio together for EMI while Elly Ameling has been a prolific recording artist for Decca, particularly with her celebrated recording of the Bach B Minor Mass with Munchinger.
This recording from The Church of St. Bartholomew the Great in 1972 also features the London Bach Society and the Steinitz Bach Players under the direction of the late Paul Steinitz, one of the early pioneers in championing an authentic Bach performing style in the UK.
This recording did not exist in the BBC Archive and has been sourced from a private collector in superb stereo sound.
