J S BACH
Brandenburg Concertos
BWV 1046-1051
Bach Collegium Japan
Masaaki Suzuki
• The Bach Collegium Japan’s long awaited recording of the complete Brandenburg Concertos, supported, in the second and fourth concertos, by the excellent recorder-player and virtuoso, Dan Laurin.
• The second concerto is fascinating for that fact that the trumpet part is played on the most natural trumpet so far seen. Toshio Shimada has spent years experimenting to produce an instrument that corresponds to Bach’s requirements and has come up with a coiled trumpet that is played entirely with the lips – there aren’t even any finger holes to aid intonation. Considering the trumpet’s dominant part in this concerto, the present version presents the work in a completely new light.
• BIS only turn to the much recorded classics when they feel that they have something special to offer. This set of the Brandenburg Concertos suits that description.
• The discs are accompanied by a highly stimulating and informative essay by Michael Marissen.
