This disc presents a fine portrait of religious music in Flanders in the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, with liturgical music that would have been sung in the choir lofts of its churches and which was part and parcel of the repertoire of many Flemish choral societies. Predominantly, the music of Peter Benoit (1834-1901) shows a great variety in style ranging from simple chorales to solo works to more elaborate motets for solo and choir. Lodewijk Mortelmans (1868-1952) wrote little liturgical music but these pieces contain some of his finest music.
