JOHN BROWNE (fl.c.1490)
Music from the Eton Choirbook
The Tallis Scholars/ by Peter Phillips
1. Salve regina I
2. Stabat iuxta
3. Stabat mater
4. O regina mundi clara
5. O Maria salvatoris
“Browne’s music is subtle, almost mystical, despite his colossal textures. The sonority will strike the modern listener most forcefully, not only in the eight-voice textures of O Maria salvatoris mater, but in the way every piece on this disc is scored for a different grouping, each creating a new sound-world within which Browne is able to deploy his incomparable grasp of sustained melody. Never have vocal lines been so seductive.”

It’s good to be welcoming The Tallis Scholars back to our pages – and with such a magnificent disc. John Browne (who was alive at the end of the 15th century) has a wonderfully subtle, individual musical language which, in the hands of such magnificent musicians as Peter Phillips has at his disposal, comes vividly to life all these centuries later. Beautifully recorded, this disc typifies The Tallis Scholars’ inimitable style.
