The composer C.F.E. Horneman was acclaimed by his famous fellow-countryman Carl Nielsen as “the bright flame and lambent fire of Danish music”.

 

This new SACD recording featuring the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under Johannes Gustavsson presents a collection of Horneman’s magnificent orchestral works, all of which have a background in mythological and historical dramas: the Ouverture Héroique of his youth and the three major mature works: Kalanus, Thamyris and the Gurre Suite.

 

Johannes Gustavsson is one of Sweden’s leading young conductors. He is a versatile artist and conducts both symphonic and operatic repertoire at a high level with a number of leading Scandinavian orchestras and opera companies.
