Many of Schubert’s piano duets were written for his pupils, the daughters of Count Esterhazy, during summer months at the Count’s country estate. These include the ‘Grand Duo’, an ambitious, large-scale and challenging work of symphonic dimensions, the more light-hearted Four Landler and the remarkable Variations sur un theme original, which are considered by many to be Schubert’s greatest set of variations.
