Spanish Love Songs takes a whirlwind tour of Iberian culture, from the mystically introspective to the opulently romantic. Decades before Spain had its own repertoire of classical songs, French and German musicians mined Spanish themes and folklore for their newly burgeoning canon of art songs. On Spanish Love Songs we hear the great masters Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf and Maurice Ravel, fascinated by the beauty of Spanish culture, along side the music of Spain's greatest composers of song.
The late Metropolitan Opera star Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, partnered by the brilliant young tenor Joseph Kaiser, gave this concert of Spanish Love Songs in 2004. As an encore, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Joseph Kaiser are joined by New York Festival of Song pianists Steven Blier and Michael Barrett in a delightful performance of “Barcelona” from Stephen Sondheim's Company.
Lorraine Hunt Liberson was the winner of the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Recording, for her performance of her husband Peter Lieberson's Rilke Songs (BRIDGE9178), accompanied by pianist Peter Serkin. Ms. Hunt Lieberson also won the 2007 Gramophone/WQXR American Music Award for this recording. Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was a much beloved artist who sang with nearly all of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. Her performances were highly regarded for their searing intensity and searching commitment and her many fans and admirers have eagerly awaited the release of her concert performances.
The release of Spanish Love Songs coincides with the upcoming Metropolitan Opera debut of Joseph Kaiser on October 3, singing the title role of Romeo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, conducted by Placido Domingo. The following month Kaiser will also be heard at the Met, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Even before his Metropolitan Opera performances, Kaiser's Tamino has been seen widely in Kenneth Branagh's recent film of
The Magic Flute.
