Matthias Goerne (baritone); Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano)
harmonia mundi has great pleasure in announcing a new series of recordings with one of the greatest interpreters of Lieder, Matthias Goerne. The aim of this ambitious project is to record a broad selection of Schubert lieder.Around a dozen discs will comprise the Matthias Goerne Schubert Edition, which will be released over the next few years. We are delighted to welcome Matthias Goerne for this undertaking. He will be fittingly accompanied by some very fine pianists including Helmut Deutsch, Christoph Eschenbach, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Ingo Metzmacher and Eric Schneider whose distinct personalities will illuminate Goerne's subtle and protean artistry. This first volume of Schubert, in his lieder, recalls us to our condition as short-lived wanderers. A solitary voice sings of its torments and desires, accompanied only by that equally solitary instrument, the eminently self-sufficient piano. Here is no theatre but the echo, at last perceptible, of our inner depths, where silence reigns, where all is grave and nothing lies to us.
Born in Weimar, Matthias Goerne studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, then with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has gained worldwide recognition as a lieder singer. He is a regular guest at international festivals and concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Wigmore Hall in London. Among his musical partners are Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Leif-Ove Andsnes,Alfred Brendel, Christoph Eschenbach and Elisabeth Leonskaja. Since his operatic debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1997, as Papageno under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi, Matthias Goerne has appeared at all the major opera houses and with the world's greatest orchestras. He is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London.
"Critics have sung Mr. Goerne's praises over and over, and one can hardly add anything at this point: The voice is one of the most beautiful - most lush, most creamy - that any of us has ever heard. His singing is almost impossibly smooth. The first time you hear it, you can scarcely believe it. Even the 10th time, you have to wonder... An impressive recital. Matthias Goerne: a first-class and unforgettable lieder singer." The New York Sun
