Janáèek’s rarely performed final opera From the House of the Dead is brought to the stage by acclaimed director Patrice Chéreau and legendary conductor Pierre Boulez
This is the third collaboration between Chéreau and Boulez, the celebrated team behind the famous, best-selling DVD Ring also on DG
To be released in March 2008 to tie in with its broadcast on Arte. Additional performances of the production are scheduled for the Metropolitan Opera in November and December 2009 and at La Scala in January 2010 (to be confirmed)
The House of the Dead will be televised on ARTE on 10 March 2008
The production, commissioned by the Aix-en-Provence Festival, has been widely hailed as one of the operatic highlights of the new millennium. “A momentous experience” is how The Guardian describes it
“Harrowing and unforgettable; one of the great Janáèek interpretations of our time.” (The Guardian)
Boulez’s contribution to the production has been equally highly praised: “With the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the pit, Boulez unleashes rending dissonances that fill the air with pain and compassion”, wrote Tim Ashley in The Guardian
