London Symphony Chorus, London Symphony Orchestra / Sir Colin Davis
DSD recording, live at the Barbican December 2007
As with Berlioz and Sibelius, Sir Colin Davis has spent much of his career championing the music of Sir Michael Tippett.A contemporary of Benjamin Britten, Tippett wrote his oratorio A Child of Our Time as a response to Nazi oppression and it couples some of the 20th century's most creative orchestral and choral writing with spirituals.
The release is the latest in a series of choral and operatic recordings from Sir Colin on LSO Live. Other recent accalimed titles include Handel's Messiah, Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ and Benvenuto Cellini as well as Mozart's Requiem. LSO Live will release Sir Colin's first ever recording of Haydn's Creation, with soloists Sally Matthews, Ian Bostridge and Dietrich Henschel, later in 2008 followed in 2009 by the world première recording of a new St John Passion written by James MacMillan especially for Sir Colin. Sir Colin was recently nominated for the Best Male Artist award at the Classical Brits.
CONCERT REVIEWS:
"few maestros seem to bind together Tippett's fractured lines with as much assurance as he [Sir Colin Davis] does... he drew superbly incisive singing from the LSC ... and the soloists rose to the occasion too" The Times
"phenomenally powerful ... the work's combination of immediate political invective and timeless spirituality remains unique and devastating. A great work, greatly performed" The Guardian
