SCHUBERT
Symphony No. 8 in C major “The Great”
Bamberg Symphony Orchestra / Jonathan Nott
In 1824, Schubert wrote to his friend Leopold Kupelwiser that he wanted to “pave his way to the great symphony”. After much struggle, these efforts bore fruit. In 1825, he completed his Symphony No.8. Robert Schumann, an admirer of the piece spoke of its “heavenly lengths”, but also noticed something far more important, namely, “the complete independence of the symphony from those by Beethoven”. He had realized that the importance of this symphony went beyond its era. Indeed this “epic” expansion would not reappear before Bruckner and Mahler. Jonathan Nott and his Bamberg forces complete their highly regarded survey of Schubert’s Symphonies with this huge work.
“….Johnathan Nott delivers one of the most satisfying (performances) of all. There’s nothing radical or interventionist about it: he does exactly what Schubert asks, and it’s a winner. Nott, as always, keeps a tight hold on the reins while expressing his convictions with a conviction that is sure to win you over.” Nalan Anthoni
“A strong sense of drama, natural feel for tempo, clarity of line and delicacy of touch make Nott’s reading compulsive listening.” Classic FM Magazine, November 2007
