A superb bargain - first time below top price!! In celebration of Sir Charles Mackerras' 80th Birthday in November 2005 - his acclaimed Janacek opera recordings in one Collector's Box. Including outstanding performances by Elisabeth Söderström and Lucia Popp.

The name of Sir Charles Mackerras is very closely identified with music by a variety of Czech composers but without question his named is inextricably linked with that of Janácek.

Decca’s series of Janácek’s operas with Mackerras and the Vienna Philharmonic were made in the late 1970s and early 1980s and were hailed as definitive with the release of each opera. Understandably there have been very few rival recordings of these operas and the Decca series has won numerous awards over the years. While the individual operas are still available this is the first time the operas have been released as a collector edition and this set includes the two popular orchestral works Mackerras also recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic: Sinfonietta and Taras Bulba.

Sir Charles Mackerras celebrates his 80th birthday in November 2005 and this set is a fitting tribute to just one of the many achievements of this remarkable musician who has done so much to promote these important works which are a cornerstone of early 20th century opera.
