Somewhat unusually for a pianist-composer of his calibre, Taneyev wrote few works for that instrument alone, although each establishes its own memorable mood. The Violin Sonata, subtitled ‘Of medium difficulty’, belongs to his mature compositional period and is notable for its blend of technical virtuosity and meditative inwardness. The Theme and Variations pays tribute to Taneyev’s teacher and colleague Tchaikovsky.
Several of the solo piano pieces here receive their world première recordings.
