RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (1872-1958)
Symphony No.4 in F minor
*Norfolk Rhapsody No.1 in E minor
Flos Campi (Suite for viola, chorus and orchestra)
*Paul Silverthorne (viola), Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and Orchestra/ Paul Daniel
The Fourth Symphony is one of Vaughan Williams’ most dissonant symphonies, and yet one of his most frequently-performed works. Vaughan Williams is normally thought of as a pastoral composer – modal, melodic, and inspired by folk-song – but this symphony marks a high-point for British modernism. In contrast Flos Campi conjures delicate pastoral images with wonderfully atmospheric music ranging from a first section depicting the poet languishing for love, to life-affirming ecstasy in the finale.
As in last year’s (2003) release of the ‘Sea’ Symphony (8557059), Paul Daniel directs the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, our resident orchestra throughout the cycle.
“Paul Daniel’s performance with the Bournemouth forces is one of the most successful to reach CD: it has spaciousness, drive and power in all the right places. The orchestral playing is refined, the choral singing robust and the ensemble tight.”
The Daily Telegraph on 8557059.
“The chorus-orchestra balance is exemplary – more convincing than on the EMI recording. A clear top recommendation. 5 stars.
” BBC Music Magazine on 8557059.
