GUSTAV MAHLER
Symphony No. 6
London Symphony Orchestra / Valery Gergiev
DSD recording, live at the Barbican November 2007
In April 2008 LSO Live will release its first recording with the orchestra's Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev. It is also Gergiev's first commercial recording of a Mahler symphony and marks the start of a complete cycle of the composer's symphonies. Gergiev is conducting the cycle in concert with the LSO in London and on tour in Europe throughout the 2007-2008 season, culminating in performances of Symphony No. 8 at St Paul's Cathedral in July 2008.
The LSO has a formidable reputation in Mahler's music, having worked in concert and the studio with many of the greatest Mahler exponents. The intensity and drama that Gergiev brings to Mahler's music promises to produce the most astounding of cycles. Following Symphony No 6, three further releases in the cycle will appear during 2008 with the remainder to follow in 2009.
Gergiev will be touring extensively with the LSO in Europe and the Far East in 2008 followed by an North American tour in early-2009. An extensive range of audio-visual resources will be made available throughout the cycle including videos of the performances and interviews with Valery Gergiev.
"If this is an indication of how the cycle will unfold, we're in for something wonderful." Daily Telegraph
