Following the success of Christopher Columbus, this beautiful CD-book, in the same format as Don Quijote, with more than 300-pages including translations in Japanese and Chinese, enables us to discover hidden treasures from Asia through the life of Francis Xavier, a Spanish pioneering Roman Catholic Christian missionary who co-founded the 'Society of Jesus', the Jesuit Order.

 

Between 1541 and 1552, Francis Xavier conducted far-reaching expeditions to the East: Mozambique, India, Malacca, Moluccan Islands, China, Japan. He belongs to the first European people who discovered the Japanese civilisation and the Roman Catholic Church considers him to have converted more people to Christianity than anyone since St. Paul. Music played a significant role in the evangelisation of the countries visited by Francis Xavier and the Jesuits usually adapted Christian texts on local melodies to maximise impact.

 

Jordi Savall plays alongside musicians from very different cultures: Western musical heritage meets African percussions and Japanese traditional instruments.
