Ensemble Consolazione
In the Biedermeier era the salon was used for music and poetry; whoever could play an instrument did so, and after finishing with the buffet, the guests went on to dance the waltz and the minuet. Thanks to a number of technical improvements, the transverse flute played an ever-increasing and ambitious role in solo and chamber music. The guitar’s soft, intimate sound was perfectly suited to the musical tastes of the Biedermeier era.
Ensemble Consolazione has played in its current format since 1995. Since 2002, the ensemble performs exclusively on original instruments or modern copies, undertakes research into historical performance practice, and unearths unknown repertoire for flute and guitar from archives and music collections. The sound of the original instruments and the faithful interpretation of the historical texts provide the music with ease and tonal balance and allow the listener to enjoy the highly varied dynamics and articulation of these delightful and often humorous pieces. Ensemble Consolazione fills this music, which contains many challenging and attractive melodies from popular operas, with new life and vigour.
