Volume 8 is the second release in this new series of luxuriously packaged live recordings from the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage and continues the principle of coupling according to feast day. Works presented in this volume include Warum betrübst du dich, a poignant and original work from Bach’s first Leipzig cycle and Jauchzet Gott, one of the most popular of all the cantatas.
The cantatas on the second CD in the set include some of Bach’s very greatest music and contain some beautifully tender and inspired arias. The Monteverdi Choir excel themselves again in the choral first movements - almost Brahmsian in Wer weiß, wie nahe, gentle and expansive in Liebster Gott, wann werde ich sterben, and in the extraordinary structure and harmony of Christus, der ist mein Leben.
