Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini
As the Vivaldi Edition continues slowly but surely to reveal the treasures of the Biblioteca Nazionale of Turin, one cannot but be astounded by the Venetian composer’s incredible versatility. Concerto, opera, cantata, sacred music – was there a single genre of his time in which he did not excel?
There are nearly sixty concertos described quite simply as ‘per archi’, for strings, without the slightest sign of a soloist, but which offer a kaleidoscopic variety of forms and styles, from strict fugues to works written for his pupils, and which also showcase the composer’s operatic output. Not only do some of these concertos bear an astounding resemblance to sparkling opera overtures, they are full of arching melodies. Vivaldi-lovers will be delighted to encounter in their new guise some of the biggest ‘hits’ from La verità in cimento, still fresh in their memories after the recent world premiere on naïve!
Before he starts work on his next operatic production for the Vivaldi Edition, Rinaldo Alessandrini shows us once again that he is just as much at home at the harpsichord, surrounded by his peerless instrumentalists, as in the opera
