Erik Lundkvist (Stockholm Concert Hall Organ)
A glorious celebration of modern Swedish organ music, recorded with the benefits of SACD. Erik Lundkvist here performs on the magnificent organ of Stockholm Concert Hall.
When one thinks of Sweden and Scandinavia’s substantial contribution to the classical tradition, organ music is not often the genre that comes to mind. The great symphonists of Nielsen, Grieg and Sibelius showed very little interest in composing for the instrument and at the turn of the century there were very few truly virtuosic organists in Sweden. However a number of composers soon emerged who raised organ music from discreet background mood music to new levels of accomplishment, amongst them Fryklöf and Olsson. Many of them had studied abroad and brought new influences to their essentially Swedish style. Here we hear German late-romantic influences (Fryklöf) as well as the hand of Messaien, with whom Södersten studied.
Stockholm Concert Hall organ, built in 1982 by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri, is the instrument of choice for Erik Lundkvist who has held the post of organist of the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm’s Gustav Vasa Church, as well as of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
