Orquesta Comunidad de Madrid / Plácido Domingo
In his third recital on Virgin Classics, Rolando Villazon shows a new side to his incredible vocal talent with a programme of Zarzuela arias. This album shows Rolando heading back to his roots, to the music of his home country where the Zarzuela singers are as acclaimed as the opera stars.
Rolando Villazon began his career in a Zarzuela – a Spanish version of operetta or music theatre – in Mexico where his first professional role was in Luisa Fernanda. He was so taken with the style and was instantly drawn to the recordings made by Plácido Domingo. During his career to date he has often added Zarzuela arias as encores in concerts. This recording has grown out of that love and desire for the repertoire.
Rolando is joined in this recording by Domingo, a man he is grateful to call his mentor, who conducts the Orquesta Comunidad de Madrid in their hometown and the birth-place of Zarzuela. Plácido is no stranger to the repertoire as his parents were Zarzuela singers, originally from Madrid, who moved to Mexico when he was eight and ran a touring company. He grew up surrounded by the music and it inspired him to pursue a singing career. The experience of recording this album with Domingo was, as Rolando says, “a continuing lesson”.
The combination of two such talents, their chemistry and connection and the interesting and significant repertoire will immediately appeal to any music lover.
The product is available in two formats; the single CD and a limited edition featuring an additional DVD with live recording session footage and interviews.
