Philippe Jaroussky
Ensemble Matheus / Jean-Christophe Spinosi
The new disc from rising star Philippe Jaroussky presents some of Vivaldi’s most beautiful opera arias for alto and soprano, and is a comprehensive sample of nearly 3 decades of the composer’s operatic writing.
Much of this fascinating opus is still relatively unknown, the majority of the arias being written for the famous castrati of Vivaldi’s time such as Giovanni Battista Minelli, Andrea Pacini, Francesco Natali and Giovanni Ossi, so will be of particular interest to the baroque specialists.
The disc features virtuoso arie di furore e di tempesta alongside enchanting and poignant melodies, each nurtured by Jaroussky’s pure and expressive voice. After his performance last year at the South Bank Early Music Weekend the Early Music Review said, “[His] expressive, agile and technically superb voice, combined with his excellent communication and stage skills, marks him out as a singer to watch.”
Philippe Jaroussky is accompanied by the award-winning Baroque conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi, and his Ensemble Matheus, with whom Jaroussky often performs. Jaroussky will be dazzling audiences in the UK next May with his own Ensemble Artaserse.
