Carl Nielsen is world famous for his six symphonies and his two operas Saul and David and Maskerade. In addition he wrote programme music and incidental music for the theatre, thereby creating some of his most popular works. This release features some of his finest pieces for orchestra, displaying the composer’s sharp sense of the humour, be it either refined or playful.
The orchestral works on this disc take the listener on a journey: from Carl Nielsen’s first true theatre music with the orchestral suite Snefrid (from 1893), to Nielsen’s very last orchestral composition, the overture Cupid and the Poet (from 1930). Also featured are other important orchestral works from the composer’s pen such as Rhapsody Overture (1927), Pan and Syrinx (1917-18) and of course the beautifully programmatic Helios Overture (1903).
Dacapo’s previous releases of Nielsen Symphonies with this orchestra have been widely acclaimed: “In sum, these performances stand as the best modern recordings of these symphonies available, and Dacapo's engineers capture them in a wonderfully realistic and natural acoustic.” Classics Today on 8224156
