The Netherlands Bach Society and Channel Classics proudly present the third in their successful series of masterpieces by J.S.Bach: the Mass in b Minor. Like the illustrated editions of the Christmas Oratorio and the St. John Passion, this cd box of the Mass in b minor has also been produced in collaboration with the Museum Catherijneconvent of Utrecht.
Priceless liturgical objects, such as glorious golden chalices set with gemstones and engraved silver salvers, illustrate the history of the mass in various churches throughout Christianity. All of the illustrations are drawn from the unique collection of the Museum Catharijneconvent, the preeminent museum for Christian art and culture in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Bach Society has recorded a performance of Bach’s Mass in b minor with first-rank international soloists, conducted by chief conductor and artistic director Jos van Veldhoven. This spectacular work, in which Bach successfully combined his abilities as a composer of vocal and instrumental music, occupies a special place within his total oeuvre. Bach’s very last composition, and at the same time his largest-scale work, encompasses not only the full text of the mass, but all of the musical genres in which he worked. For this reason, the Mass in b minor is a fitting crown on Bach’s entire artistic creation.
This luxuriously executed cd box set of the Mass in b minor contains two Super Audio cds (also playable on conventional cd players) of the highest audio quality. In addition the cd box set includes a handsomely designed textbook in full colour. In addition to some eighty illustrations, this fourpart book also includes several informative articles relating to the Mass in b minor and the underlying themes of the mass, as well as the full text of the composition.
