• Turkey maintains a rich concert culture, with numerous outstanding symphony orchestras (four alone in Istanbul) and opera companies. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many western artists were brought to Turkey to study. The most famous example is Paul Hindemith, who made four longer trips to Ankara during 1935-37 to organise its music schools. His assistant was a Turkish composer thirteen years his junior - Necil Kâzim Akses.
• Akses has earned a place in European music history with his major symphonic works. This recording of his monumental Violin Concerto (1967-69) with Cihat Askin, who ranks as the best Turkish violin soloist of the younger generation should generate much interest.
• Askin is accompanied by the wonderfully flexible NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra of Hanover under Rengim Gökmen.
