This 2cd, drawn from the catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics, present a selection of the best-loved and most popular ballet music by the great composers, performed by the world’s leading artists.

George Balanchine was one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century and the creator of a unique style of modern dance, combining classical forms and techniques with unconventional movements. In 1967 in New York he created the first full-length abstract ballet: Jewels. The complete score, using music by Fauré, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky, is included here. The rest of the programme consists of Balanchine’s signature American work, Serenade (to music by Tchaikovsky), his setting of Tchaikovsky’s uncompleted Piano Concerto No.3 (Allegro Brillante) and his inspired version of Bizet’s Symphony in C that never fails to bring the house down with its final exciting ensemble featuring four ballerinas with their partners and four attendant corps de ballet.
