Accentus Chamber Choir/ Laurence Equilbey
Led by Barber’s choral arrangement of his famous Adagio, this is a superb disc of transcriptions for unaccompanied choir offering a totally new insight into a number of masterpieces of late Romanticism. The misty vision of Venice in Pesson’s version of the celebrated Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No.5 (familiar to all who have seen Visconti’s Death in Venice), finds an echo in Barber’s Agnus Dei, the composer’s own transcription of his deeply moving Adagio for strings (immortalised by Platoon).
Those who know and love the repertoire for a cappella chorus often express particular regret that the masters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries wrote so seldom for choral groups. This gap has been partly filled by today’s chorus masters, who commission contemporary composers to produce arrangements of vocal and instrumental works from this rich period for choir.
The disc also includes Mahler, Wolf, Debussy and Ravel arrangements by Clytus Gottwald, Franck Krawczyk’s remarkable versions of Chopin and the bewitching Bach chorale revisited by Knut Nystedt.
It all adds up to a kaleidoscope of vocal colours, an ideal issue to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Laurence Equilbey’s award-winning Accentus Chamber Choir, unanimously recognised as one of the finest vocal ensembles in the world.
