A lot is known and written about the baroque Spanish guitar, as it is the ancestor of all modern guitars. Less is generally known about the players and composers for this instrument. Of that species, Bartolotti is probably the most important example. He invented an entirely new technique for playing the guitar, examples of which can be heard on this CD. His technical and musical influence reverberate down the centuries (Rodrigo wrote a concerto in his honour), but remarkably few of his works survive. Representing half of his surviving output, this CD forms an excellent basis on which to judge later compositions.
