In the latest disc on their Northern Lights sub-label, BIS release a charming selection of popular classics arranged for low strings. The cello and bass section of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra revel in their sonorities in this programme consisting of fresh arrangements of some of the best-loved works in classical music. Having already been praised for their interpretations of Sibelius and contemporary Finnish music under Osmo Vänskä, this section of the orchestra now turn their hands to something altogether different.
The arrangements by Ilkka Pälli, cellist and leader of the ensemble, are highly accomplished and expertly crafted. Made specifically for the artists who perform on this disc, Pälli uses his specialist knowledge of the instruments to create many unexpected effects. The programme tests the extremes of the cellists abilities: from dreaming in Schumann's Träumerei to flying at top speed for Rimsky-Korsakov's Bumblebee.
The main work on the disc is Mussourgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which already has been colourfully orchestrated several times, most famously by Ravel. It is unlikely that it has ever been done solely for cellos and basses however, and even without the full range of orchestral colour available these versions of the miniatures are full of charm. For example, the Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks and the quarrelling children in Tuileries shows an astounding delicacy considering the forces, while the Great Gate of Kiev in contrast is astonishingly powerful.
