Beethoven was the lodestar of the art and ambition of the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886–1954), who is said to have known all Beethoven by the age of 12, most of it by heart. Later, Furtwängler explained that Beethoven conveyed to him more vividly than any other artist the ‘organic’ and the ‘catastrophic’ elements of material and human nature. And, in short, Beethoven seemed to speak for the whole of humanity.
No work appeared more frequently in Furtwängler’s concert programmes than Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Between 1918 and his death, he conducted more than a hundred performances and made two superb recordings for EMI: first with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1937 and then in 1954 this formidable remake with the Vienna Philharmonic.
Not far behind the Fifth in frequency of performance by Furtwängler was Beethoven’s Seventh, famously described by Wagner as the ‘apotheosis of the dance’. This 1950 EMI recording was greeted in Gramophone as ‘the Vienna Philharmonic at its brilliant best. Furtwängler’s Seventh is excellent Beethoven, combining Dionysian energy with Herculean force’.
