Opera Arias by Mozart, Gluck and Gretry.
In the aria from Mozart’s La finta semplice, Rosina beseeches the little Cupids (Amoretti), not to pierce her heart with their arrows – a plea that of course generally goes unheeded. So it is in this recital that love is examined in all its facets and in the most beautiful manner – song. Alongside arias by Mozart and Gluck, there are two less well known ones by their French contemporary André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry, one of which is presented here for the first time on CD. With this compilation Christiane Karg takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride that begins with a tender plea and leads via yearning, tenderness, pain and despair to the final “Adieu”.
“After experiencing wiry-toned screeches (Patricia Petibon, Mojca Erdmann) in similar repertoire on disc, it is a relief to encounter a light soprano who can sing the most demanding high notes and coloratura without sounding hard pressed, metallic and shrill. This young German soprano has impressed at Glyndebourne and in Salzburg, where she sang Amore in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Here, she sing that character’s aria Soumis au silence, from the later, expanded Orphee et Eurydice, in excellent French. It is the best-known item in a set chosen with taste: the title track comes from La finta semplice, by the 12year-old Mozart.” – The Sunday Times.
German singer Christiane Karg has won particular acclaim in recent years, having had one success after another since her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2006. In 2009 the periodical Opernwelt voted her Newcomer of the Year in the female singer category and she received the ECHO Klassik award for her first song CD “Verwandlung” the following year.
Born in Feuchtwangen, Bavaria, she studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and in Verona.
Following a stint at the Hamburg Opera Studio, joined the ensemble of the Frankfurt Opera in 2008. She intends to concentrate more on guest performances, concerts and recitals in future. She worked with the conductor Jonathan Cohen in the Glyndebourne Touring Opera in the 2010/2011 season. They had such a good rapport from the start that it was decided to record the planned aria CD with him and his Arcangelo ensemble in London. Arcangelo is a group of top young musicians who play on period instruments with a vigour that infects everyone – listeners included. This CD, which follows a thematic concept, is the result.
