Quartetto Borciani
• Naxos begins its survey of Boccherini’s enormous string quartet output with this programme of string quartets, including the only available recordings of the Quartets Op.32 Nos.1 and 2.
• Boccherini wrote 91 string quartets – even more than Haydn, who only managed 83! His musical style indeed owes much to Haydn, and these three string quartets are excellent examples of that style, combining melodic profundity with harmonic adventurousness.
• The programme is performed by the Quartetto Borciani, who all studied with the Quartetto Italiano’s Paolo Borciani. Their name may be familiar from their world premiere performance of Puccini’s string quartet, written while he was still a student. Between 1997 and 1999 they gave an acclaimed cycle of the Beethoven string quartets in Milan that also included all the quartets and fragments without opus numbers.
