This live recording of a performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, given by the exceptionally gifted violinist Ginette Neveu - on 3rd May 1948 in the Hamburg Musikhalle - is a unique document, if only because it is almost certainly the only live recording of a Neveu concert (a year later she died in an air-crash at the early age of only 30).
The critical acclaim following this concert was overwhelming, as exemplified by the Hamburg Echo’s comment from 8th May: “Ginette Neveu, the young French violinist of unquestionably international class whose secret lies, in the final analysis, in concentration and absolute discipline, gave a masterly performance of the Brahms concerto. She played with an unparalleled gift for flexible expression which was coupled with an extreme musical passion and sense of rhythm”. The accompanying musicians were scarcely less formidable: conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra.
