Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 in E major was the composer’s first symphony which successfully overcame resistance on the part of both audiences and critics. It has remained, incidentally, the composer’s most frequently performed symphony. After the first performance in Vienna, Hanslick himself had to admit that the Seventh Symphony had a profusion of masterful inspirations, interesting concepts and details (he could not refrain, though, from a spiteful remark that the “good” moments get “lost in the darkness of unending boredom and excessive excitement”). The work proved a spectacular success, its premiere marking the beginning of the positive reception of Bruckner’s symphonic output.
