The Undiscovered Piano Works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, as recorded for the first time here by Waka Hasegawa, were composed in the 1900s. They have, until now, lain undiscovered and unrecorded.

About Waka Hasegawa
Waka established a successful career as part of the internationally acclaimed piano duo ‘Piano 4 Hands’ (with British pianist Joseph Tong), and as a much sought-after soloist. She has given recitals in the UK, America, Europe and Japan, as well as being part of broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, BBC World Service and WFMT Radio Chicago. She has also worked with various musicians from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Wales Symphony Orchestra.

About Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, born in London in 1875, developed his extraordinary musical talent as a child, and by the age of 15 he was admitted to the Royal College of Music where he first studied violin. It was in response to a challenge, that after ‘Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet’ no one could write a work of the same kind without showing the German composer’s influence, that Coleridge-Taylor wrote one of his most remarkable works. It is a piece of precocious maturity, original in content, in spite of the stylistic influence of Dvorak, and highly accomplished in technique. However, the extraordinary promise of that work and others written at the same time wouldn’t continue. His career would have worked out differently had he not signed away the rights to ‘Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast’ for 15 guineas. This would have provided the means for him to support himself and his family without subjecting himself to the incessant money-making labours which, as he finally succumbed to pneumonia, killed him at the age of 37.
