Prokofiev, Sergey

Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontsivka, Ukaraine in 1891. A child prodigy, with the support of a musical mother, Prokofiev had already written two operas by the age of 11. In 1905 he gained a place at the St. Petersburg Conservatory where his teachers included Nickolai Tcherepnin and Nickolai Rimsky-Korsakov. By the time he graduated he had gained a reputation for being an eccentric, arrogant and rebellious modernist composer. In 1918 Prokofiev left Russia for the US where he was compared to Rachmaninoff, and well-received as a gifted solo pianist. The 1920
