Four strings form a quartet - if not unusual. A very unusual color gets the ensemble, however, if there are four instruments of identical pitch is, in this case, four violas.
The idea for this unusual composition started four members of the Munich Philharmonic, the adventure "Viola Quartet. Of course the original repertoire for this instrumentation is minimal, which are the only two original compositions on the debut CD of the group the "Night Pieces" by Max von Weinzierl and the "Fantasy Quartet" by York Bowen. Astor Piazzolla's famous "Four for Tango", however, was edited from the original string quartet version for four violas. Not really "modification" you have to consider the other compositions on this CD: The concerts written by Georg Friedrich Telemann, initially for four violins, here is a fifth sound deeper. A selection of duets from "44 Duos for Two Violins" follows the issue for two violas by Bela Bartok's son Peter.
