Soumik Datta, the astonishing, young "British Sarod Maestro” (Time Out), collaborates on this new album, ‘Circle of Sound’, with Austrian-born drummer Bernhard Schimpelsberger (Taalis) who plays a Western drum kit like a tabla virtuoso. Mercury Award Winner Talvin Singh is one of the guests on the album, playing tabla on one track.
Datta has worked with: Beyonce, Nitin Sawhney, Raghu Dixit, Bill Bailey, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, poet Javed Akhtar, and dancer Akram Khan, amongst others - and composed the soundtrack for the feature film ‘Life Goes On’. Schimpelsberger/Taalis has studied with Trilok Gurtu and regularly performs with Nitin Sawhney and Susheela Raman.
On ‘Circle of Sound’ these two virtuoso stars of contemporary British Asian music produce a thrilling mix of modern influences, using traditional Indian music as a launch-pad. Datta’s approach to the sarod includes chordal, guitar-based techniques plus ambient electronics and pre-recorded text, while their live performances add strong audio-visual and theatre elements.
Soumik Datta is fast being recognized as “one of the biggest new music talents in Britain” (Vogue), and was artist & composer in residence at the 2011 Alchemy festival at London’s Southbank Centre.
