Bavarian-born Werner Egk (1901-83) always considered himself to be an international musician and he drew inspiration from other eras (particularly French baroque) and cultures, including Caribbean. It is therefore hard to explain his relative neglect outside Germany; certainly once heard, his music is impossible to forget and it is expected that this important release will win him many more friends. He studied with fellow Bavarian Carl Orff but soon developed his own personal style which has been described as ‘Stravinsky with tunes’! His first outright ‘hit’ was the hugely enjoyable and witty folk-opera Die Zaubergeige (The Magic Fiddle, 1935), highlights of which are included in this collection. Having been commissioned to compose music for the Berlin Olympics, Egk then lampooned Nazi leaders and ideology in his next opera Peer Gynt (1938). His music was labelled ‘degenerate’, but despite his left-leaning views he unexpectedly found himself in favour in Berlin. His song-cycle La tentation de Saint Antoine (Temptation of St Anthony) composed in 1945), is a raunchy yet playful narrative of the saint’s narrow escape based on eighteenth century texts and tunes. It is here presented in its baritone version on CD for the first time.
