An extensive cross-section of seventeenth-century German lute songs, performed by the young German baritone Martin Hummel.
The lute, a plucked string instrument of Eastern origin, was introduced into Europe during the medieval era and maintained its popularity throughout the seventeenth century. The repertoire of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century lute songs was extensive, individual European countries developing their own styles. Love was a popular theme, in keeping with the predominant theme of medieval courtly poetry.
